The best friend
Friendship does not threaten a relationship by itself. The problem begins when a best friend gains authority to receive intimate details, judge the partner, and effectively vote in the couple’s decisions.
How the coalition forms
Section titled “How the coalition forms”After every conflict, one accusatory version leaves the home. The friend hears it without context, validates the grievance, and returns a ready verdict. The partner now argues with an alliance in which his position has already been classified as an excuse.
Advice becomes pressure when “she agrees with me” replaces a personal argument and a request for privacy is labelled isolation.
What to do
Section titled “What to do”Agree on which details remain within the relationship. Ask for first-person ownership: not “my friend said,” but “I decided.” Refuse to litigate your relationship before an outside arbiter you did not choose.
A partner may have friends and seek advice. A decision whose consequences belong to two people must be made by those two people.
