Mother said

“Mother said” does not mean closeness to parents. It means an adult’s refusal to own a decision. The mother gains access to the couple’s budget, home, parenting, and conflicts; her approval becomes a condition of peace.

An agreement changes after a phone call. A mother’s criticism is relayed as objective truth. The partner is compared with a parental ideal and ordered to prove loyalty through concession. Resistance is labelled disrespect for the family.

A triangle forms: one member of the couple has not separated from the parent, while the other must compete for a place in his own family.

Do not litigate with the mother over authority in your relationship. Require your partner to make and own the decision. Mark areas that relatives may not enter without joint consent: money, intimate details, parenting choices, and access to the home.

Respect for parents gives them no vote in their adult child’s marriage.
