“A man must” presents another person’s demand as a law of nature. A man is expected to provide income, protection, initiative, and emotional stability while reciprocal duties remain her free choice.

The substitution

Duty is assigned by sex and access to its result is called equality. Refusal is labelled weakness or greed. Any discussion of cost, risk, or workload is stopped by invoking a “real man.”

This is not an agreement. In an agreement, both parties name their contribution, receive a vote, and may refuse before accepting the obligation.

What to do

Translate the slogan into terms: what exactly is required, what reciprocal contribution is offered, and how risks are divided. Do not prove masculinity through spending or danger. Accept only a duty you choose and can reconsider when circumstances change.
