Using children as leverage
Children become leverage when contact depends on money, obedience, or surrendering a lawful claim. “You will never see the child again” attacks both the father and the child.
What is violated
Section titled “What is violated”A child is not a reward for an ex-partner’s approved conduct. Article 55 of the Russian Family Code protects the child’s right to contact with both parents. Article 66 bars obstruction of contact with a separately residing parent unless that contact harms the child.
What to do
Section titled “What to do”Do not bargain with the child in return. Communicate in writing, propose a precise schedule, preserve refusals, and meet your own duties. Do not relay threats through the child or demand a choice of sides.
If agreements are repeatedly broken, obtain legal help and seek an enforceable contact arrangement. Money, property division, and personal resentment must be handled separately from parenthood. Demand a shared-parenting system that preserves decisions and ordinary weekday care, not a vague promise of visits.
